i originally bought this item to supplement a multimedia setup that did not have proper in-wall wiring access to support connecting various multimedia components to their intended output device. Wanting to forgo attempting to alleviate the missing access with a direct wiring option for the moment, i decided to attempt a wireless solution.As for what comes in the package:- A wireless transmitter with two (2) hdmi input ports and one (1) hdmi output port- A wireless receiver with one (1) hdmi output port- A remote for controlling power and source input between the transmitter and receiver- Power adapter with round connector for Transmitter- Power adapter with mini-USB connector for Receiver- HDMI cable- IR Blaster cable- two (2) AAA batteries (for remote)- Quick Start Guide- Warranty/Registration cardSince you are more than likely already familiar with setting up the components you are intending to connect using this device, it is fair to say that the setup is pretty self explanatory and for the most part there are no real surprises to getting everything connected properly. The included Quick Start guide is informative enough to get you going as well should you require it.Choosing placement for the Transmitter and Receiver will depend heavily on the configuration of the area(s) you are intending on connecting and the placement of the devices supplying and receiving the intended AV source. In my case i was not going from one room to another, so i did not have to worry about walls or floors in between. Although i am sure as with any wireless device any source of possible interference has the possibility of weakening the signal between the transmitter and receiver devices. Again with wireless, clear line of sight between the Transmitter and Receiver is sure to provide the best signal strength, but from my simple tests is not required for a consistent connection.Simply plug the transmitter in to a wall outlet and the AV source(s) (up to 2 of them) feed into the transmitter using standard HDMI cables. Similarly connect the Receiver using the supplied cable (or your own) to the target device and plug the device in using either the supplied mini-USB power adapter, or possibly more beneficial, a standard mini-USB to USB cable to connect the device directly to a USB port on the device the Receiver is connected to. This was one of the main draws regarding this device when i was initially investigating which device to choose. Even though i ended up with plenty of outlet options in my setup (so i only tested the USB power out of curiosity to see if it actually worked), being able to power the Receiver through USB could come in handy for those looking for a little extra convenience when their target device already has the required ports to support this capability.Once connected and powered up the devices have LEDs that glow either blue or red to indicate active and standby modes respectively. When actively searching for the signal of the other device, the LEDs blink to show the status, and becomes solid once the connection is established. Along with the LED color/status there are also on-screen indicator icons that depict the status of the device when there is no input being transmitted, and a button on the remote can display this as well should you require it when there is.In my experience the delay between startup and connection is not too long, but also seems to be based on the detection of the connected input signal availability. So while not instantaneous, whether the delay is significant or not will depend on the normal time spent waiting on the connected devices to startup (if required). For a setup involving a projector for instance, the devices should generally be synched well before the projector has fully warmed up its lamp. For a typical TV setup the extra delay may take a little more getting used to depending on how snappy you like your entertainment response times. Once connected though everything seems to hold up well when you have a good signal between them. i have not noticed any particular lag between them so far either, and this is mainly intended for use in a gaming/movie setup in my case. The audio and video quality seems to withstand the transmission, with no discernible degradation, but i would have to try in more configuration setups to really pass full judgement and i am definitely not the most hardcore video/audiophile when it comes to determining output quality. For those more attuned to such things the output port on the transmitter itself will come in handy to bypass any transmission issues and pass the output to another source if needed (or can simply be used to drive another target device in addition to the device connected to the receiver).Switching between sources is simple enough using either a button on the provided remote, or a button on either the transmitter or receiver to toggle between the two possible choices.The only issue i have had with the device has been with its interaction with my Sony Amplifier/Receiver (STR-DH740). When connected using the output from the amp/receiver i had to make a few changes to the receiver settings to get both audio and video to transmit initially. Using the AMP mode of the receiver the video would not be transmitted, and i had to change the receiver to use TV+AMP mode to get things working. This in and of itself works fine, but ended up having other issues when it came to certain input device sources. Playing games through the devices connected in this manner worked out fine (on the 360/wiiU for instance), but any attempt to play disc based media (dvd or blu-ray) through other devices (360/ps3/ps4) had the tendency to cause it to start to drop connection after a short while (Netflix/streaming seems to be fine so far). Speaking with IOGEAR support i got mixed responses on the cause, with most representatives defaulting to the stance that if it works when connected directly to the device then it is a problem with the interaction between the device and the amp/receiver, but that technically the device is working properly. And there does not seem to be a consistent stance on how well using a receiver in between will work across brands supposedly due to variations in how EDID and other information are handled between them (but again i got mixed responses depending on who i talked to, some more informative than others). Ultimately i chose to have the source input run directly into the transmitter for the moment, and use the output hdmi port from the transmitter into the amp/receiver to retain audio output to the speakers. This does allow for a steady signal in all cases i have attempted so far, but is rather disappointing that better steps were not taken to ensure proper compatibility with what i am sure will be a common configuration and use case for this type of device.Since this was not a connection between rooms, i do not have any input currently on the IR repeater functionality used to control devices remotely through the Receiver to Transmitter connection.At the time of writing this, i also did not have the chance to test the 3D streaming capabilities yet, but will try to update when i get the chance to do so.Overall the device has been very handy in terms of allowing me to use my multimedia devices without the extra effort of running cables everywhere to get source and destination connected to one another. Out of fairness i will say that the device does what it is intended to do very well so far, and when connected directly to the input/output devices i have currently had no issues. But as a consumer i still have to take points off for it not performing consistently in what i believe to be a highly probable common use case for the device.Would definitely like to hear more experiences when it comes to using the device with other amp/receiver brands/models. Or better yet, more clarification from IOGEAR on the details of the issue and possible solutions.
